Owens right to reject tribes' offer
|
Last week, Gov. Bill Owens rejected the so-called "settlement proposal" by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, which basically sought his OK for expanded casino gambling in Colorado.
Even with the lure of $1 billion dangled by the promoters, the governor didn't get sucked into the deal. We applaud his call.
The settlement - which some have described as not much more than a bribe - stems from a land claim that the tribes filed with the federal government for 27 million acres along the Front Range and in northeastern Colorado. The tribes say the land is rightfully theirs because they were illegally forced off of it in the late 1800s.
