PROVIDENCE-- After several days of intensive marathon back-room negotiations, separate House and Senate committees passed slightly different casino referendum bills within minutes of each other.
The House Finance Committee passed its version of a bill that would put a West Warwick casino referendum question on the November ballot by a 13-4 margin.
The Senate Committee on Constitutional and Gaming Issues approved its measure, 5-2.
The bill would put in place a complex sliding scale tax rate that gives the state a higher percentage of what the casino takes in as the gross revenue rises.
