Senator denies casino conflict
|
DETROIT — A state senator says he’ll continue voting on gaming measures brought before the legislature despite owning a share of Detroit’s MotorCity Casino.
The legislature has no formal rules governing potential conflicts of interest among lawmakers, but a group bidding to operate a horse track with slot machines at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit contends Sen. Samuel “Buzz” Thomas III, D-Detroit, shouldn’t vote on gaming matters.
Thomas, whose district covers the state fairgrounds, said he doesn’t view his stake in MotorCity Casino, which amounts to “one-third of one share,” to be a conflict. He said he opposes gaming at the fairgrounds.
